Jamie Kelly
My Story
The following is a brief rundown of the one punch attack that Jamie and us as parents endured:-
On the 16th September 2021 at approximately 1.30 in the afternoon Jamie was standing waiting to cross Ramshill road in Scarborough when a man (if you can call him a man) walked up behind Jamie and punched him with such force that Jamie fell to the ground hitting his head on the kerb. It was a totally unprovoked attack and it was caught on cctv. Jamie did not know this person. Someone passing on the street called an ambulance and the police and Jamie was blue lighted to Scarborough Hospital unconscious.
A neighbor who witnessed the attack and knew that I was Jamie's father rushed to my home and told me what had happened.
On arrival at the hospital a policeman came out of the treatment room and told me that doctors were still working to stabilize Jamie. He also told me that the attacker was arrested within minutes of the attack and that they had a copy of the cctv showing that the attack was unprovoked. Eventually a doctor came from the emergency room and told me that Jamie had a severe bleed on the brain so they were going to blue light Jamie to Hull Royal Infirmary and it was touch and go if Jamie would survive. At this point I rang Jamie's mother Brenda who lives in Spennymoor County Durham and told her what had happened and that as soon as I had seen the doctors at Hull I would update her on Jamie's condition.
Brenda was distraught and inconsolable that her son was fighting for his life and that she was so far away from him.
The neurosurgeon at Hull told me that they would have to send Jamie for an emergency operation and that I should prepare myself for what could happen. I rang Jamie's mother Brenda and told her what was going to happen and once again she was both distraught and inconsolable. It was even worse for Brenda when I had to tell her that due to Covid she was unable to see Jamie in hospital. I was lucky that I was able to be with our son and I was able to ring her every day to update her about her son's condition. I cannot imagine the pain that Brenda endured not being able to be with Jamie.
The neurosurgeon had to remove all of the left side of Jamie's skull to allow them to try and stop the bleed on his brain. The operation went well but Jamie was still fighting for his life and indeed over the next couple of weeks Jamie's life was saved half a dozen times. When Jamie was eventually stable he was transferred to York Hospital to help his recovery.
I was lucky that I could see my son every day but it was almost three months of constantly breaking down crying before Brenda was allowed to visit Jamie even though he was in a medically induced coma due to the amount of anti seizure medications he was on. At last Brenda could be with her son and hold his hand and just talk to him. We both knew our son was still with us as there was movement of his eyes when he heard our voices.
When Jamie eventually came out of the coma he was transferred to Woodlands Neurological Rehabilitation Centre where he was taught to walk and talk again. It was a full ten months before Jamie was able to finally come back home.
Although Jamie's recovery has been fantastic there is still problems that he will have to live with for the rest of his life. There was no Justice for Jamie as the person who attacked Jamie was only given a 29 month prison sentence and he only served half of that sentence where Jamie has been given a life sentence. Even though it was a one punch attack there is consequences.
Both myself and Brenda are lucky as we still have our son.
